I chose to investigate the “Therapy Dog International” link. TDI is an organization of volunteers that regulates, tests, and registers therapy dogs and their volunteer handlers so that they can visit nursing homes, hospitals, other facilities, and other places that need therapy dogs. On this page, owners of therapy dogs offer day to day anecdotes of their dogs and the activities they do. TDI was founded in 1976 in New Jersey. It is a nonprofit organization (TDI). The world is aware of the importance of dogs to aid humanity. They’ve served as flock guardians, hunters, search and rescue workers, guides for the blind, and helpers for the deaf and physically disabled. Although the relationship between man and dog has existed for a long time, it wasn’t until lately that a link was made between this relationship and human emotional well-being. According to studies, holding or petting an animal can lower blood pressure, relieve stress, and tension, and help someone overcome loneliness and despair. As a nurse, this is important information to share with clients who are trying to overcome their illness and need coping support. Sometimes all we need is the loyalty and love from an animal.

For this week’s discussion post I chose the “International Critical Incident Stress Foundation” website because the word “stress” stood out to me. Believe it or not first responders and emergency personnel do go through many stressful moments, and at times most individuals going through stress do not know how to properly manage their stress.

The co-founders of the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, Dr. Jeffery Mitchell, Ph.D., CCISM, and Dr. George Everly, Ph.D., CCISM have been providing peer support training for over 30 years (Resources. ICISF 2022). You can either be a member or an instructor and learn how to help other individuals during tough situations they may be trying to overcome. By receiving the proper training with them, you will be certified to help others.

The information that had the greatest impact on me was that Critical Incident Stress Management is a method of helping emergency personnel or first responders who have been involved in crucial situations which cause them to be emotionally or physically affected. In my opinion, this is a great idea because if one is physically or emotionally affected, that individual would not be able to give their all when it comes to saving lives.
