Description

Facilitate shared decision making through negotiation and consensus-building methods.

Scenario:

Your organization saw a need for additional support, so they gained approval to hire a new staff member. A job posting went out, several people applied, and 15 people were interviewed. The committee narrowed the field to four candidates but could not decide between the four. They decided to form a second committee to review the résumés and select a candidate from the finalists. You and your group members have been selected to sit on your organization’s hiring committee. Each person on the committee will approach the task from the perspective of one of the character profiles (Kelvin, Shallon, Giva, or Gustavo). Your charge is to negotiate with the other members of the committee to select one new staff member. If more than one candidate is selected by the committee, a consensus must be found.

I have “Kelvin”: Getty Images/Blend Images Kelvin is a 25-year-old social worker. He has worked with the organization for 2 years and has proven himself to be a hard worker with creative and innovative ideas. Kelvin is very outgoing and relates well with the clients who come into the facility. He is always polite and friendly and is described as “always having a smile on his face.” Kelvin grew up in a very traditional Tanzanian home. His parents emigrated to the United States before he was born, but they still practice cultural traditions like keeping your left hand to yourself, respecting elders, avoiding any show of anger, and shunning public displays of affection. There are times when his cultural traditions are overlooked in the workplace, but those closest to him at work try to be respectful. Kelvin was chosen to be in this committee because of his innovative ideas and willingness to work with anyone. However, he is the youngest member of the group and may defer to those with more experience and age when confronted with adversity.

The most important characteristics for the open position are:

Organization skills

Outgoing personality

Ability to relate to many different types of people

Experience in a public health setting

  • Note: The fictional résumés are designed so that each candidate has one of the important characteristics so there will not be a clear best candidate.
