I do believe police pursuits are beneficial. However, anything the police do is going to be criticized if there aren’t perfect results. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, from 1996 to 2015 there have been an average of 355 deaths annually in pursuit related crashes. Obviously it would be beneficial if that number went down, however, some ideas to help bring it down will do more harm rather than good. Apparently, a really effective method would be to cease the pursuit. I honestly couldn’t think of anything worse to do. If word gets out that the police are going to give up during a high speed chase then I believe the amount of people speeding would increase drastically. There mentality would be the police aren’t going to try to stop me. This increase will cause even more harm to the public. The National Transportation Safety Board conducted a safety study researching U.S passenger vehicle crashes from 2005 to 2014. A total of 112,580 were caused by speeding. That is a dramatically higher number of fatalities in only 9 years compared to a total of 6,745 deaths in over 19 years from police pursuits. I can’t imagine the spike in deaths that would appear in those results if the police were to officially end pursuits. This proves that police pursuits are worth the risk they pose to citizens. Again the results are not perfect, but they are better than the alternative.

Unit V Discussion Board Question
The Supreme Court ruled that police officers can perform a “stop and frisk” in public to make reasonable inquiries as to a person’s conduct as long as they meet certain criteria. Based upon the five criteria found on pages 184-185 of your textbook, do you agree or disagree with these justifications? Why, or why not?

Unit V Discussion Board Question
As we have learned, the American correctional system is a critical element in the criminal justice process. Consider the role and the goals of our correctional system coupled with the rising inmate population, lack of funding, and lack of prison bed space that currently exist.
In your opinion, does the use of probation, parole, and community corrections seem to address the needs of our criminal justice system and provide a sound solution to such issues surrounding our correctional system? Explain your reasoning.

Great post on the explanation of deadly force and less-than-lethal force. Your post has been exciting and informative because apart from effectively explaining the two concepts, it also seems that you have enjoyed explaining both deadly force and less-than-lethal force. It is indeed true that deadly force can be used when lesser means have been exhausted meaning instances such as self-defense allow the use of deadly force. For instance, if a police officer finds a criminal stealing and then tries to arrest them and the criminal starts to shoot at the police officer, then the officer is allowed to use deadly force. Thus, since the officer may either cause serious bodily harm to the suspect or even kill him, it can be termed as deadly force. Your explanation of less-than-lethal force was also very good. It is true that police officers are trained to use this kind of force in situations that may involve alcoholics or mentally ill people. It is also important to add that it is the kind of force that law enforcement agencies usually use to bring law and order in the society. This means that police officers should not cause any bodily harm when in the process of maintaining law and order in the country, unless when they are in great danger. For instance, if an officer finds a criminal committing a crime and when they try to arrest them, the criminal tries to flee, then the officer may use a rubber bullet which can be categorized as a less-than-lethal force.
In all of our discussions, what comes across to you the most? Thinking critically, how do we enhance the responses of the officer?
