Question

Dennis is a 42-year-old man with cerebral palsy, and has quite high support needs. Dennis is of average intelligence, has limited verbal communication, but is able to express both joy and displeasure through smiling or groaning respectively. Dennis only has limited access to an alphabet board – workers rarely have time to support him with the board.

Dennis lives in a community based group home, which he shares with 3 other people with similar disabilities to his own, and where residential care workers support the 4 tenants.

Dennis desires opportunity to try other communication aids – he wants to be able to communicate more independently with peers and support workers. Using his alphabet board Dennis has also expressed that he desires more involvement in decision making around his day-to-day care, daily activities, and leisure and lifestyle decisions.
