the nursing profession is distinct in the healthcare industry and entails collaboration between nurses, patients, families, communities, and other healthcare professionals to provide care. Nurses’ coordination of patient care is crucial to enhancing the standard of care and patient outcomes (Alnahdi, 2020). As a result, all nursing professionals use a variety of interventions to prevent illness and promote health. Additionally, the profession requires advanced knowledge and education. Lower-level nurses have the chance to earn a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate (Kluge, 2022). Career advancement aims to accomplish professional and academic objectives and gain more expertise in the field of specialization.

The improvement of patient care, the development of professional abilities and competence, and the effectiveness of healthcare systems all depend on professional specialization and advancement. Each nurse gains expertise and can manage challenging healthcare situations (Alnahdi, 2020). The roles that advanced nurse practitioners can play are varied. As a result, they can select an area of interest specialization. The elderly, young children, reproductive groups, and other special patient populations are some of the patient populations that require advanced levels of education and training. The number of specialties and the variety and evolution of patient healthcare requirements grows. The specializations broaden the range of interests nurses can pursue and gain knowledge in (Kluge, 2022). Selecting a specialty that fits personal interests and academic and professional objectives can be much more complex. People encounter difficulties while considering various factors, including academic, personal, and social considerations.

In my situation, some of the academic consideration conundrums involved specializations or academic requirements that would fit my areas of interest in specializations. Every specialization has particular prerequisites that a nurse must meet before beginning. The marketability, employment prospects, and field of study were also crucial in assessing my future in the specialty of choice (Kluge, 2022). Along with academic specialization, career prospects, such as professional growth, job security, occupational prestige, and employment options, were considered. Personal considerations can also result in a puzzle, which is why they were a crucial component of the matrix. It involves considering one’s passions, skills in school and work, objectives, sources of inspiration, motivation, and mental stamina (Alnahdi, 2020). Social factors influenced the area of interest’s specialization, including the state and locality’s pervasive health issues that necessitate nurse specialists, family, mentors, and peers. Nursing with a focus on tele-oncology.

Making a decision was difficult because I needed to balance my academic, personal, and social priorities. Most factors, like my academic requirements, which fit most specializations, and my abilities, were easier to manage (Alnahdi, 2020). On the other hand, it was challenging to appease some social expectations, such as other family members and peers wanting me to fulfill my interest in fulfilling their particular desires and opportunities. To connect me to her friend, a psychiatrist, a family member insisted that I specialize in psychiatric nursing. To meet the rising cancer burden in healthcare and its global health burden, I explained my passion for specializing in tele-oncology nursing. The effort would improve their quality of life. My mentor and peers also find that I have a personality that makes me a good fit for tele-oncology nursing because I like to address patients’ health issues quickly (Alnahdi, 2020). Consequently, I aspire to become a tele-oncology nurse specialist.

An example of a professional association associated with my specialty is the oncology nursing society (ONS). The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) is a nonprofit membership organization of more than thirty-five thousand members committed to promoting excellence in oncology nursing and the transformation of cancer care (Wittenberg, 2018). ONS participates in a variety of advocacy activities. It lobbies Congress on behalf of nursing, especially oncology nursing, providing educational resources, developing careers, expanding professional networks, and providing research opportunities for its members. Becoming a member entails oncology nurses and other nursing affiliates such as students and educators interested in oncology nursing joining the oncology society. Members save big on books, certification, and continuing nursing education—not to mention all the networking (Wittenberg, 2018). Members join or renew their membership through the ONS website https://www.ons.org/

It has been one of my academic goals to advance to MSN. This goal has been motivated by the need to achieve my full potential in practice. Thus, realizing the dream of pursuing the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) postgraduate degree was one of the most fulfilling realities ever. It is a mark of starting a career as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, which is an effective way of giving back to the community. In turn, I would become an asset to the community and nation by helping many struggling individuals with mental health conditions and substance use disorders. Currently, mental health conditions have heightened, especially after the pandemic. According to the report released by mental health America, about 19 percent of the American population struggle with mental problems (Mental Health America, 2021), where the pandemic instigated most cases amounting to over one million individuals (Reinert, Fritze & Nguyen, 2021). For these reasons, choosing PMHNP was an easy choice. Primarily, this is because, after going through the four distinct options of advanced practice for registered nurses in the consensus model, I immediately identified with the PMHNP specialty. I did not struggle with the choice because the specialty conformed to my service desires; it would be a way of helping a close friend who has been struggling with mental problems since early last year and an avenue for giving back to the community grew in. Every time I listened to him, I wished there was something I could do. To me, this was a magical realization of my potential. Also, it would fulfill my long-term slogan that health cannot exist without mental health.

Similarly, because my community had limited access to mental health facilities as I was young, I was motivated to go for the PMHNP specialty. Many physicians did not want to work at the community level and only preferred concentrating their services in the big cities – I am ready to work at the community level to reach many needful individuals. After graduating with honors, I plan on becoming a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA). APNA provides several membership options, where being a registered nurse is the minimum qualification for most membership plans (APNA, 2022). This practice’s long-term goal is to open my own practice in my community.
