The law does require us nurses to respond in disaster situations. Refusal to respond in a disaster situation can be punishable. Although, during a disaster things are not done correctly at times to ensure the life of a patient, nurses struggle with the legal aspect in regards to their license. Nurses want to do the best for their patients but a disaster creates more of disparady in patient care for example, limited supplies. The Uniform Emergency Volunteer Health Practitioners Act (UEVHPA) helps us nurses and practitioners in these situations (Disaster preparedness). If there is good faith, nurses are suppose to do what they deemed fit to save a patient’s life. Nurses have a contractual responsibility to respond in disaster situations. It is the oath we take when we become nurses. “Nurses owe the same duty to self as others”. State laws in Florida allow for nurse and medical providers to provide emergency relief free of charge if they feel free to do so (Disaster Nursing & Emergency preparedness 2022)

Many states have laws that require nurses that are licensed to serve as first responders whenever a disaster occurs. When there is a natural disaster an “all hands on deck” scenario, anyone with clinical training are needed to help the community and provide first aid to anyone injured. Many nurses volunteer and treat patients if there ever were to be a natural disaster. The ethical thing to do as nurses is to respond and take care of patients in disaster. However, if nurses feel like they are physically unsafe in the response situation, if there in inadequate support for the meeting of their own families , many will struggle to respond to the care of others. Nurses should always show compassion and responsibility when caring for sick patients but nurses also have the ethical obligation to take care of themselves. In Florida, the law requires all licensed medical professionals who wish to provide emergency first aid do so free of charge and under the auspices of an organization such as the American Red Cross.

The foundation of nursing is mainly based on evidence-based practices; this help to maintain the adequate structures need to provide patients with the highest quality and safest patient care. Strengthening EBP in nursing will also support the nurse’s integrity and help protect their license by performing their jobs with the most updated protocols. A recent clinical scenario that questioned the nursing intervention was when I witnessed a nurse give a pain medication through another access that was not an intravenous line. The nurse used another port the patient had in which they usually perform hemodialysis through. The nurse’s reason for this was that the patient was in a tremendous amount of pain and did not have any access. However, that was not an EBP, and the nurse should never administer any medication through another access from an Intravenous line or even a midline. The nurse not following the most updated EBP put her and her patient at risk. The nurse failed to follow the model of scientific evidence practices. The nurse must support the most updated EBP; providing the nurses with that information will set up a better clinical practice, support continuing education, and form a collaborative team approach (Tacia et al., 2015). In my future as a nurse, I will be implementing the most updated EBP because they have been scientifically researched and studied. I must ensure the facility I work for keeps the nurses updated with the best stand practices and protocols.

Evidence?based models are a great resource for deciding how to respond in clinical circumstances. A patient of the doctor I work with had advanced directives on file and was on a ventilator. The patient’s son entered the room and requested that the vent be shut off. His son said that the father had informed that he did not want to be kept alive by a machine and that it was time for him to pass away. The choice was made with the aid of the PARIHS model. The model had been used in this situation to assist in determining whether or not to take a man off of the vent. The parties, obstacles, and facilitators in the circumstance were all identified with the model’s assistance. Additionally, it aided in the creation and application of an EBP change initiative. In my opinion, it is the most complete of the four types. It takes into consideration every factor important for the proper use of evidence-based practice. I’ll use EBP models extensively in my role as a nurse. They offer a terrific foundation, in my opinion, for nurses to employ when deciding how best to care for patients. They would also help ensure that we as nurses make judgments based on the greatest available evidence, in my opinion.
